Return of The King - Saw it and loved it but have one question to ask. In the books...does it end like that?

In answer to your question, yes and no.
Yes that's what happens to all of the characters, but there was a large chunk of the book left out -- the journey home to the Shire. This journey was an adventure all its own, but it will probably be in the extended version.
Kind of bad editing I thought with the ending. The screen fades like six times only to have another goodbye scene. There could have been a more fluid transition. But that is the only part that dissappointed me. Everything else was fairly true to the book.

Sydney...you aren´t the only one who hasn´t read the books. I had never heard of Lord of the rings until I saw the 1 movie.

My uncle saw it and said the ending isn't the same as in the books. Evidently in the books, there is a final battle in the shire. After this one ends, Samwise receives seeds of some sort and begins to regrow the entire Shire.
The book ends with Samwise becoming "governor"...or something along those lines.
